About Us

Welcome to the website of DEALT.

We are seven primary schools in Deal who have recently formed an exciting and unique partnership, through a ‘Mixed Multi Academy Trust’.

We see DEALT as an opportunity for true and meaningful collaboration, bringing incredible experiences to our children and schools. The strong local focus enables us to nurture and holistically attend to the educational growth of our families and communities.

In DEALT we are very proud of the values and distinctiveness of each of our schools. The structure of the MAT ensures high levels of autonomy, whilst ensuring support is available when needed.

A fundamental principle of DEALT is an unswerving commitment to integrity and transparency alongside a restless pursuit of excellence. Ultimately ensuring that every child in our care attends a GREAT school.

Equal Partnerships

The school academies are equal partners within The Trust. At all times the partners will strive for consensus in decision making, recognising that each Academy has both strengths and areas for development. The Academies will seek to preserve and protect each other’s distinctiveness and will be respectful of each Academy’s respective ethos and mission. The Academies will work collaboratively with each other, sharing knowledge and best practice, to fulfil the Trust’s vision.

Leads strategic work with children, young people and schools.

The Archdeacon of Ashford

Ven Darren Miller moved to his appointment as Archdeacon of Ashford from his role as Team Rector for Cheam Parish in Southwark Diocese, where he was also Area Dean of Sutton, an honorary Canon of Southwark Cathedral and a member of the Diocesan Board of Education for the Diocese of Southwark. 

Ven Darren has a degree in Public Policymaking and Administration at Birmingham University and worked for the Church Commissioners before training for ordained ministry at Chichester Theological College and at the College of the Resurrection in Mirfield. He served his curacies and first incumbency in Birmingham Diocese before making the move to Cheam.  The Archdeacon of Ashford is responsible for the Deaneries of Ashford, Dover, Romney and Tenterden, Elham, and Sandwich, supporting the clergy and communities in their care of God’s people. Together with the Archdeacons of Canterbury and Maidstone, he holds a senior position assisting the Bishop in leading the Diocese.

Principal Lecturer in Education, Canterbury Christ Church University

Chair, DfE expert subject advisory group for Art and Design; Vice Chair of All Chairs group.  Current president of National Society for Education in Art and Design

Teaching experience in primary, secondary, special schools and now in initial teacher education.

Tricia Sherling

Former primary and secondary teacher and headteacher of 3 primary schools.   OfSTED inspector and school improvement partner. 

Local lead governor; Governor trainer; external adviser for headteacher appraisal.

National Leader of Education.

Executive HT of three schools – two outstanding, one good – and mentoring two other executive heads.  Pupil premium reviewer. Leadership advocate for South Kent.

Jo is the only employee who will serve as a trustee. 

Esther Taborn

Currently works for the local NHS commissioning team and the National Infection and Prevention and Control. Has 20 years experience as a registered nurse. Experienced in managing complex change, quality improvement and efficient resourcing. Previous experience in policy development, service development and skills in the management of staff. Holds a MBA qualification in Infection Prevention and Control

Matthew HUDSON

Qualified Accountant, Senior Management experience in Business Planning, Cost Analysis and financing with TfL.  Strong commercial skills including major procurements.  Managing large departments in business and political environments.  2 years Governor Sandown Primary School and chair of finance committee. 

Ross Wooding

Has 17 years of experience of Health and Safety. Previously worked at Associated British Ports for 10 years and now works for Canterbury City Council as the Corporate Health and Safety manager, ensuring compliance and best practice is achieved with legal statutes and guidance from enforcing authorities. Areas of expertise include asbestos, legionella, gas, electricity and fire safety. Also has responsibility for lone working. Qualifications held include- NEBOSH National Diploma in Health and Safety Level 6 and Chartered Status of Institute of Health and Safety (IOSH).


Qualified accountant (FCCA) with many years of experience at senior level in various sectors. Most recently I was Deputy Bursar (Finance & HR) in a leading multi-site independent school. The role included responsibility for all non-academic areas excluding premises and catering.   Local governor.

Simon Weatherley

Has managed the IT function for Porta for the last 5 years, prior to that was the IT support manager for Huntsworth plc. Strong skills in procurement, contract negotiation, marketing, GDPR and IT strategy.

Pete Talbot

Headteacher since 2002 in London and Kent. Both schools have undergone huge transitions and faced significant challenges which I have managed with very positive outcomes.

On the Board of Shepway Teaching School and involved in the recruitment of all potential Schools Direct candidates.

On the invitation of the Local Authority, speaking to different groups on a number of issues, such as raising standards, working together, managing change, community cohesion and managing an early years provision.

 Recently appointed as a Kent Leader of Education (KLE).

I am married with two teenage daughters and love living in Kent!


Former Headteacher of two successful primary schools. A trained Ofsted inspector. Considerable experience as a Senior School Improvement Advisor with impact on improved pupil achievement. Experience in mentoring teachers to ensure they deliver good and outstanding learning and with Head teachers through the Head teacher appraisal process.

Roger Walton

Chartered civil engineer with experience gained within both private and public sector. Director with Dover District Council. Trustee of Martha Trust, a provider of homes for adults with profound disabilities. Served as Chair of Governors with Kingsdown & Ringwould CEP School for almost 20 years.

Alexandra Farbrace

Alex is a qualified solicitor and has worked as an in-house lawyer for the Financial Conduct Authority, focussing on investigations into breaches of the FCA rules and civil/ criminal law offences. Alex’s skills include:

  • Assimilating complex data
  • Managing stakeholders
  • Identifying breaches in regulations
